An artists impression of the infamous "Fountain of Youth", said to restore he/she who drank the water's youth, and which Juan Ponce de Leon spent much of his life to find.
Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer, conquistador, and the first governor of Puerto Rico. He led the first known expedition to “La Florida”, which he named, and is today just known as Florida. Juan was born in 1474 and grew up in the village of Santervas de Campos. His ships arrived in La Florida in 1513, while he was searching for a way to find the famous “Fountain of Youth”. The Fountain of Youth is an old story that has been around for thousands of years with an unknown origin but that has been mentioned in various ancient writings such as writings by Herodotus (5th Century BCE), the Alexander Romance (3rd Century CE), and the stories of

John (Early Crusades, 11th/12th centuries CE). As the story goes, there is a hidden spring in La Florida that supposedly restores the youth of anyone that drinks or breathes in it’s water. Although Juan never found what he was looking for, people today still carry on his expedition, looking for ways like the fountain of youth to stay young forever.
